A very peaceful and boring duel left Chile and Peru (0-0) in debt for the near future in Group A of the Copa América, in which Argentina defeated Canada 2-0 and leads the classification on the first date. The ‘Pacific Classic’, a confrontation with generally fiery stories, dampened the spirits of the thousands of Chilean and Peruvian supporters at the AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas, until only a few murmurs could be heard.

Not even the special day for Chile’s coach, the Argentine Ricardo Gareca, distracted from the lack of play between both South American teams. ‘El Tigre’ Gareca faced his former managers from Peru for the first time, where he is a revered figure for having led the Inca team to the 2018 World Cup in Russia after 36 years of absence.

“It was a very disputed game, a game with a lot of friction, and in general we couldn’t string together many plays,” Gareca commented self-critically at a press conference at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. “We were a little imprecise,” he added.

Since January, he has been in charge of finding replacements for the heroes of the Chilean golden generation, champions of America in 2015 and 2016, and of squeezing the last drops of talent from the remnants of that generation, represented by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and forward Alexis Sanchez.

Another hero of that feat, Arturo Vidal, stayed in Chile. At 41 years old, only Bravo stood out as a figure by denying goals to Miguel Araujo in the 43rd minute and Gianluca Lapadula in the 57th and 89th minutes to keep his team on their feet and seal the tie.
