On the second day of the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America, two South American countries get set to square off in Group A competition, as Peru and Chile will meet deep in the heart of Texas. These two sides have been consistent faces in the semifinals of the tournament over the last decade and change. Peru has advanced to the final four in four of the last five Copa Americas, falling to Colombia in the third-place match in 2021, losing to Brazil in the championship match in 2019. Chile won back-to-back Copas in 2015 and 2016, before losing to Argentina in the third-place match in 2019.
It will be tough for Peru to make another deep run in an expanded field, but they will be a sleeper with striker Edison Flores on the pitch. Inconsistency has plagued the team recently, especially in World Cup qualifying, picking up just two points over the five matches.
Chile has had a similar tale, never being able to string two wins together in any competition. That win in 2016 came on American soil, which should give the nation some optimism heading into the tournament. One of the other concerns is the lack of talented youth, as 35-year-old Alexis Sanchez is being relied on to carry the load.
