Mexican boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion, will face American star Terence Crawford this Saturday, as Crawford seeks to become the first-ever undisputed champion in three different weight classes.
With a record of 63 wins (39 by knockout), 2 losses, and 2 draws, Alvarez aims to hand Crawford his first defeat; Crawford enters at 41–0 with 31 KOs and already holds undisputed crowns at both 140 and 147 pounds.
“We know Canelo is a tough opponent, and we know him well. We know who he is, and that’s why we took this fight—because legends are made by taking risks like we are now,” Crawford said at the pre-fight press conference ahead of the bout at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It will be a stern test for Alvarez, who at 35 has not looked as dominant in recent outings and hasn’t scored a knockout win since stopping Caleb Plant in November 2021.
In his most recent fight, this past May against Cuban contender William Scull, the action was limited, yet Canelo still had his hand raised and captured the IBF super middleweight title to add to the WBA, WBC, and WBO belts, reclaiming full undisputed status at 168 pounds.
Before that, he defeated Puerto Rico’s Edgar Berlanga, countryman Jaime Munguía, American Jermell Charlo, and Britain’s John Ryder, though without the clear superiority he once displayed.
His choice of opponents has also drawn criticism, as they weren’t seen as the most dangerous options at super middleweight, and he passed on opportunities to face David Benavidez, an offensive force who was the WBC mandatory challenger.
Crawford, too, has raised questions, as the 37-year-old will be moving up two divisions—always a demanding leap in boxing.
Although the Omaha native boasts one of the best résumés of recent years, taking on a naturally bigger opponent presents a real disadvantage.
