This season marks the second year of the new league phase format, introduced last year. The first stage consists of eight matchdays with a single ranking table for all 36 clubs. After these matchdays, the competition moves into the knockout rounds, including play-offs, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the grand final in Budapest.
The draw system divides all participating teams into four pots based on their UEFA club coefficient, with Barcelona placed in the first pot. Each team will face eight opponents, playing four matches at home and four away. An automated program determines the exact matchups and venues. Teams from the same country cannot face each other in the league phase, which means Barcelona will avoid domestic rivals like Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Athletic Club, and Villarreal, with a maximum of two teams from the same federation possible in each group.
Currently, 32 of the 36 participating clubs are confirmed. The remaining four will be decided after the final qualifying matches, which take place on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Once the league phase concludes on January 28, 2026, the top eight teams automatically qualify for the round of 16 as seeded clubs, while teams ranked 9th to 24th will face the play-offs to reach the knockout stage.
The group stage draw will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. CEST (11:00 a.m. Mexico, 12:00 p.m. Peru/Colombia, 1:00 p.m. US ET, 2:00 p.m. Argentina) at the Foro Grimaldi in Monaco. The draw starts with Pot 1 and continues in descending order through the remaining pots, assigning Barcelona’s eight opponents in a process that ensures fairness and avoids domestic clashes. The league phase will start on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, and conclude on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, with all final matchdays played simultaneously.
The Barcelona group stage opponents will be drawn from the four pots, meaning the team could face a mix of top European clubs from Pot 1 and strong challengers from Pots 2, 3, and 4. Domestic teams like Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are excluded, but the draw could see Barcelona paired with teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Arsenal, Napoli, Tottenham, or other top European clubs.
