Ruiz enters with a 35-2-1 record and 22 knockouts, having not fought since his majority draw against Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller in August 2024. The 36-year-old Californian became the first heavyweight world champion of Mexican descent when he stunned Anthony Joshua in 2019, but his career has slowed considerably since losing the unified titles in the rematch later that year. He has reunited with longtime trainer Manny Robles for this comeback and recently signed a multi-fight promotional agreement with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
Knyba brings a 17-1 record with 11 knockouts and a major physical advantage. The Polish heavyweight stands 6-foot-7 and is coming off a third-round stoppage loss to Agit Kabayel in January, when he challenged for the interim WBC heavyweight title. The matchup is therefore less about rankings than momentum: Ruiz is trying to prove that he can still compete at the highest level, while Knyba has the chance to establish himself with the biggest victory of his career.
The tactical question is straightforward but difficult to solve. Knyba has to make his reach count by keeping Ruiz at long range and working behind the jab. Ruiz, meanwhile, will be at his best if he can close the distance, get into the pocket and bring his hand speed into play.
