Teófimo López defeated Rolly Romero by majority decision to capture the WBA welterweight world title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The official scorecards were 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112, giving López the victory in the boxing main event and a championship in a third weight division.
The fight brought together two former friends and sparring partners, with Romero making the first defense of his WBA title against López, a former lightweight and junior welterweight champion. After a competitive 12-round battle, López did enough on the judges’ scorecards to take the belt from the defending champion.
López’s victory marked another major achievement in his career as he added the WBA welterweight championship to his résumé. Romero, meanwhile, suffered a narrow defeat after entering the bout as the reigning titleholder following his victory over Ryan Garcia.

Romero enters the matchup as the defending WBA welterweight champion and carries the heavier power into the ring. His recent victory over Ryan Garcia changed the trajectory of his career and placed him among the division’s biggest names. López, however, arrives with a different set of credentials. The former lightweight and junior welterweight champion has already proven that he can perform at the championship level, and his speed, athleticism and experience in major fights give him several paths to success.
That is what makes the matchup difficult to call with certainty. Romero has the physical strength and punching power to change the fight with one decisive sequence, while López can rely on his movement, hand speed and ability to adapt over the course of a long contest. The outcome may ultimately depend on who controls the range and tempo first, making this a fight with legitimate arguments on both sides rather than a straightforward favorite.
The event is headed by Romero’s first defense of his WBA welterweight title and López’s attempt to become a world champion in a third weight division. The card also features a mix of established contenders and unbeaten prospects, with Yoenli Hernández vs. Francisco Verón and Victor Santillan vs. Gary Antonio Russell among the most notable undercard matchups.
