Mauricio Pochettino’s Team USMT got off on the right foot with a 2-0 win over Panama on Saturday, October 12 in an international friendly played in Texas. Christian Pulisic found Yunus Musah early in the second half for the game’s only goal, playing a waist-high ball in front of goal that allowed his AC Milan teammate to open up and comfortably finish into the middle of the net.
It was Musah’s first goal for the national team, and it came in a promising match that showed fluidity in positioning, increased intensity and some positive movement with and without the ball, capped by Ricardo Pepi’s stoppage-time goal to double the Panamanians’ lead.
In the first 90 minutes, with him in charge, you could see the style Pochettino wants his team to play. The most encouraging sign, especially early on, was the versatility that the formation and players could bring.
With the win, the U.S. gains momentum ahead of a much more important test on Tuesday: a friendly in Guadalajara against rival Mexico.
