Mexican Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, the great figure of boxing today, defeated on Saturday night by unanimous decision the American of Puerto Rican origin Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas (United States) and retained his undisputed super middleweight crown.

Alvarez sent Berlanga to the canvas in the third round and then imposed his greater experience to win in a very hot fight at the T-Mobile Arena, packed with 20,312 fans who cheered loudly for the Mexican idol.

Canelo, 34, ended Berlanga’s undefeated status but has yet to score a knockout win since 2021.

In his turn, Edgar Berlanga showed up with a Puerto Rican flag - for his Puerto Rican roots - and accompanied by singer Fat Joe. The ‘Chosen One’ weighed in at 167.6 pounds.

“Let’s go up, Puerto Rico, tomorrow there’s war,” said Berlanga, confident of achieving victory. “It’s ‘Canelo’s’ party, but we’re here to ruin it.”

For his part, Saúl Álvarez appeared with his championship belts, and after greeting hundreds of fans who were waiting for him, weighed in at 166.8 pounds.

“Thank you for the support, it means a lot to me,” Álvarez told his fans and responded to Berlanga’s challenge: “It’s very easy to say that he’s going to knock me out, but I’m sure he’s going to face something very different from what he’s used to.

“I’m ready to prove it with facts,” he added.

Saul Alvarez, 34, will come into this fight with a record of 65 fights with a balance of 61 victories, of which 39 were by knockout, two draws and two losses.

On May 4, in his previous appearance in the ring, ‘Canelo’ defeated his compatriot Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision.
