As the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) payment schedule indicates, this week will mark the first round of Social Security check mailings to retirees after May 1997. Every month, the SSA releases exact payment dates to retirees and beneficiaries of other social programs so that they can better manage their personal finances.
What is the first round of Social Security payments?
For retirees prior to May 1997, Social Security usually sends checks the first few days of each month, while for retirees after that date, payments are divided into three rounds. For June, the distribution days will be as follows:
- Wednesday, June 12: payments to retirees retired after May 1997 born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
- Tuesday, June 18: payments to retirees retired after May 1997 born between the 11th and 20th of any month.
- Wednesday, June 26: payments to retirees retiring after May 1997 born between the 21st and 31st of any month.
How much does Social Security send to retirees?
The amount in monthly checks each retiree receives depends largely on the age of retirement. Those who retire early at age 62 receive $2,710 each month, those who retire at age 67 receive $3,822, and those who retire at age 70 receive $4,873.

For Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries, the payment schedule for general Social Security beneficiaries continues to be Wednesdays, based on date of birth. That cadence, according to SSA, is as follows:
- For birth dates falling on the 1st through the 10th, recipients receive payment on the second Wednesday of each month.
- For dates of birth falling on the 11th through the 20th, recipients receive payment on the third Wednesday of each month.
- For dates of birth falling on the 21st through the 31st, recipients are paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
