California has not elected a declared winner in the at this reporting snapshot, and congressional results are not yet available. Voting remains underway, with polls open until 8 p.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, November 3. County officials begin reporting election results after that deadline.

Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton are competing to succeed term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom. Voters are also choosing representatives for California’s 52 U.S. House seats, with those contests contributing to the national battle for control of Congress. Here is what California readers need to know before the first returns arrive.

Who Won the California Governor Election in 2026?

No winner has been established at this pre-close snapshot. Official county results pages are displaying zero reports, which are placeholders published before election-night counting produces reported totals. They do not mean that nobody voted or that the candidates have finished tied. San Francisco’s election department, for example, lists no ballots counted and schedules its next update for 8:45 p.m.

Becerra previously served as California attorney general and U.S. secretary of health and human services. Hilton is a former Fox News commentator and former adviser to British Prime Minister David Cameron. Both advanced from California’s June 2 all-party primary to the November general election.

California Congressional Results: Which House Races Matter?

California voters are deciding all 52 of the state’s U.S. House seats. At this snapshot, the congressional results service reviewed for this article is awaiting the first returns after 8 p.m. Readers should follow their individual district rather than interpret the statewide governor tally as evidence of a congressional outcome.

Several contests offer useful regional entry points. In the Sacramento area, independent Kevin Kiley faces Democrat Richard Pan in the 6th District. In the Central Valley, Democratic Representative Adam Gray faces Republican Kevin Lincoln in the 13th District, while Republican Representative David Valadao faces Democrat Randy Villegas in the 22nd.

Other notable matchups include Democrats Scott Wiener and Connie Chan in San Francisco’s 11th District, and Republican Jim Desmond against Democrat Marni von Wilpert in the San Diego-area 48th District. California’s redrawn congressional map makes district-specific reporting particularly important when comparing this election with previous cycles.

These races are separate elections: each district chooses its own representative. A useful results update should identify the district, candidates, reported totals, reporting timestamp, and whether an outcome is merely a lead or has been called.

What Time Do California Election Results Come Out?

California polls close at 8 p.m. PST, equivalent to 11 p.m. Eastern time. The secretary of state’s election calendar says county officials begin reporting at 8 p.m. and report totals at least every two hours during the election-night semifinal canvass until that process is completed. Individual county publication schedules can differ.

For local returns, county election departments provide the most directly relevant reporting. Los Angeles County, for example, publishes election results and explicitly warns that counting and verification continue after election night.

When Will California’s Election Winners Be Official?

Election-night numbers are preliminary. California continues processing eligible ballots during the canvass, including qualifying mailed ballots received after November 3. To count, those mailed ballots must carry an Election Day-or-earlier postmark and reach the county elections office by November 10.

That schedule explains why a close contest may remain unresolved beyond election night. County certification is due December 3, followed by statewide certification on December 11. Those deadlines are different from the timing of a news organization’s race projection.

For verification, use the California secretary of state for statewide reporting and the relevant county election office for local detail. This article’s snapshot combines official election deadlines, county reporting pages, and attributed candidate information; it does not treat pre-election expectations or unreported totals as a completed result.
